History:
The Franz Schubert School of Music and Performing Arts and Music School was founded by Eduard Horak in 1867. As early as 1871 the 'State - Exam Course' was introduced. Both Eduard Horak and his successors founded branches in Vienna, but also in Baden and Bad Vöslau. In 1943 the Music School was separated from the School. In 1961 the School was awarded the privilege of taking state exams - one year earlier than the Conservatory for Music of the City of Vienna. Since 1970 pedagogical training has been available. In 1979 the Horak School was renamed into Franz Schubert School. Under the management of Prof. Helmut Neumann, M. A., the jazz department was founded by Mr Erich Gaebelein. In the same year Mr. Neumann introduced the three years teacher training course for teachers of elementary music, which is only available at the Franz Schubert School. In 1983 Prof. Karl Svec acquired the Franz Schubert School, moved it to Mariahilferstrasse where he had two storeys reconstructed in 1984 and two other ones in 1995. That is how he succeeded in combining theoretical and practical tuition in one central building. In 1992 the 125th anniversary was celebrated in the Old Town Hall of Vienna, honoured by the participation of representatives of the Ministry of Education, the Council of Vienna and foreign diplomats. |
